Caregiving Is Activism: Liz Wheeler of Secondhand Stories

In our latest “Caregiving is Activism” campaign, we’re asking caregivers what it means to them. Here’s the response from Liz Wheeler of Secondhand Stories:

“As a sanctuary caregiver, advocating for chickens (and all farmed animals) is integral to our mission. It is impossible for us to ignore the thousands of requests we receive to rehome chickens that we don’t have the capacity to save. It is our responsibility to use our experience in caregiving to boldly speak up against practices that harm and exploit chickens. Having the lived experience of providing medical intervention for hens who are egg-bound or simply roosters who cuddle and coo – allows us to speak as a knowledgeable source on the humane care of chickens. Not only can we use our voices to advocate for chickens, but we can inspire the public to view chickens as individuals. In a world filled with factory farming, where hundreds of thousands of chickens are killed each day, we showcase a humane alternative where the personalities of each and every single chicken in our care can blossom.”
