Residents as Ambassadors: Fannie of Sweet Peeps Microsanctuary

We often hear people say animal advocates are “voices for the voiceless.” As caregivers, we recognize that non-human animals DO have voices, and, as the keepers of the vision for animal liberation, sanctuaries operate as platforms to amplify the voices of non-human animals.

Fannie was rescued in 2019 when a farm in Colorado went bankrupt. Fannie, alongside. seven others, made her way to Sweet Peeps Microsanctuary.

In the words of Fannie’s caretaker, Tracey:

“Those were the first chickens I ever really knew. When I took them in, I quickly learned that they all had unique personalities. And while some wanted nothing to do with me, which I respected, Fannie made it clear from the beginning she wanted everything to do with me. She loved her sisters and enjoyed her time with them, but we had a special bond. She would always run to greet me, follow me around the yard, and ask to be held. And then when I would pick her up and hold her, she was so calm and content in my arms, I always felt like she would stay there as long as she could. And that was true for her whole life.

She was the first chicken who taught me how loving and lovable chickens could be. She was so smart and had a tremendous enthusiasm for life. She inspired gentleness and filled my life with so much love. If people had any idea that chickens are such emotional and intelligent beings, I have to believe that we would change. I want nothing more than for the world to know what I know.”
