Alice (no longer with us) and Zoe founded The Weetbix Gang in 2018. I’m Jo, and I am the caretaker of our microsanctuary and have been vegan and an animal advocate for 12 years.
Weetbix HQ grew from a desire to give sheep the opportunity to live out their lives in safety as individuals.
By doing this in a micro-sanctuary setting, people have been able get to know the Gang on a more intimate level, with the hope being that they’d learn more about how wonderful sheep are and make different choices that meant sheep (and all animals) didn’t have to needlessly suffer.

I manage the day-to-day care of all of our residents and believe that my key responsibility is to get to know each resident’s individual personality, preferences and needs.
Our animal family currently consists of 5 sheep and 2 cats.
We’ve had 10 sheep residents over the years, and 2 dogs along with our 2 current cat residents.
While I am the primary caregiver, we are also supported by a wonderful group of Patrons who cover the Gang’s food bill each month, and we have amazing friends we can call on for physical help with sanctuary clean ups along with others who also have sanctuaries are are there for moral support and advice.

Our microsanctuary is currently home to 5 sheep and 2 cats.

The sheep were from “industry,” including Jade and Bambi our old gals who were used to breed lambs for the “meat” industry. They are now able to live their lives without being bred or exploited and will never know the terror of a slaughterhouse.

As they have aged, much of our focus has shifted towards providing compassionate geriatric care, including managing arthritis, dental problems and other age-related conditions.
Willow is Bambi’s now-adult daughter who gets to live alongside her mama and Zack her BFF, who is a winter lambing orphan survivor.
Zoe was spared from the holding pens at the slaughterhouse as a bid to have activists leave the facility following violent footage being leaked from the kill room.
Our 2 cats have very different backgrounds and needs. Lainey came from a hoarding situation and Freyja (Woody) was impounded and on a shelter kill list.

Our particular focus is on sheep and challenging the way they are perceived. Sheep are often overlooked in society despite being intelligent, social and highly individual animals with strong personalities and the capacity to form relationships and experience a wide range of emotions. By sharing the lives of the Gang, we hope challenge the false perceptions and narrative many hold about sheep, and to show the world that they are individuals rather than “livestock”, resources or just a number.
