Cassondra grew up in a family where hunting, fishing, and eating meat were a normal part of life, but from an early age, she felt a deep connection to animals as individuals deserving of compassion and respect.

Cassondra always dreamed of starting a sanctuary and eventually realized she didn’t need hundreds of acres or millions of dollars to make a difference. In 2020, she founded Zen Hen Sanctuary by adopting two abandoned hens, Chili and Chowder.

Since then, the sanctuary has cared for approximately 30 residents, all with medical needs and histories of trauma and/or neglect.

Today, Zen Hen is a small but mighty microsanctuary with four coops and 13 residents, each receiving individualized care, veterinary attention, enrichment, and—most importantly—the opportunity to live safe, loved, and respected lives.
