Meet MRC’s Medical Care for All! Grant Recipient

Thanks to generous public donations, MRC was able to finish 2025’s Medical Care for All! Fundraiser with over $500 raised for a medical microgrant!

Now we’d like to celebrate by showing that reproductive healthcare microgrant in action, as shared by microgrant recipient Rachel…

“Meet the love of my life, Yolanda… I found Yolanda in a trashcan on an egg farm, with my small team of women. Yolanda jumped up when I lifted the lid of the trashcan to see what (or actually who) was being thrown away. She was on top of at least 30 other unalive and some decaying bodies of her egg laying sisters.

This is standard practice in the egg and all animal agriculture industries. This was not a fluke or an accident. She was THROWN AWAY! You can find a ‘dead pile’ at almost any industrial agricultural facility. They can be hidden or sometimes they are just the black trash bin that looks like the ones we use every day.

We took Yolanda home and gave her food and water, and she received medical care for a large wound under her wing. She was malnourished, dehydrated, and needed some basic wound treatment, and she is alive and thriving almost seven years later.

She also lived with my American Staffordshire Terrier, Khaleesi, who passed away last year at the age of 16. Yolanda has always thought she was the same species as Khaleesi. They were always together.

She resides happily with her other living ‘siblings’ in San Diego, California, having full autonomy of her home inside and out. Every night Yolanda asks to be lifted on to her ‘perch’. Her chosen spot is a bookshelf that oversees the center of the house. I tried changing her spot but she has always refused and finds her way back to the very top of the shelf. Every morning she gets down and gets in bed with her ‘mamma’ and siblings at 6am and preens or naps until everyone is ready to get out of bed. She is the true queen of the house. She spends days lounging in the sun, on the couch, or wherever she chooses.

At this moment she is laying next to the fireplace listening to music and preening… she is loved by everyone… unless you take your shoes off or they are open toed, she doesn’t really care for feet! Haha!

I will not stop caring for these oppressed animal people who are someone and not something to be used for their body.”
